Reflecting on 25 Years of the West African Football Academy: From Youth Coach to Managing Director
By: Jan Gösgens
When I first arrived in Ghana back in 2000 on behalf of Feyenoord, I could never have imagined that I would one day return to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the West African Football Academy (WAFA). At that time, I was responsible for training the second generation of players from 2000 to 2005. Many of those young athletes have since gone on to make names for themselves as professional footballers in Africa, Europe, and the U.S.
I am always touched when these former players tell me that their time at WAFA was the best time of their lives.
I am always touched when these former players tell me that their time at WAFA was the best time of their lives. These memories remind me of the lasting impact that a strong football academy can have, not just on skills development but also on personal growth and friendships.
After 20 years, I’ve returned to Ghana, this time not as a youth coach—although I have enjoyed every moment of my 30-year career coaching at Feyenoord Rotterdam, Feyenoord Ghana, Supersport, and FC Den Bosch. Today, I am honored to take on the role of Managing Director at WAFA, following in the footsteps of Karel Brokken.
What hasn’t changed in 25 years is the essence of WAFA: friendship, respect, and most importantly, fun. In football, the importance of enjoyment can sometimes be overlooked, but for me, it’s the foundation. When players enjoy what they do, it shows—on and off the pitch. Football at its best is carefree, played daily alongside teammates who become friends for life. We train hard, fight for every meter, and most importantly, have fun.
WAFA has attended countless tournaments, taking our players far beyond Africa, giving them not only exposure but memories that last a lifetime. As we celebrate 25 years, I’m excited to see how the next generation of WAFA players will continue to carry these values forward.
Here’s to many more years of nurturing football talent and fostering lifelong friendships.
